Superstar Weekly Newsletter 2-17-23

Superstar families,

We had a great week here at Brook Park celebrating Valentine’s Day and Kindness Week! Just a reminder, there is no school on Monday, February 20th due to President’s Day. Please take some time to read about upcoming events before the long weekend:

5 Essentials Survey:

We are inviting parents to complete the 5 Essentials Survey about Brook Park School and the link is http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ This information is important for us to continue to grow as a school. The survey is open from Jan. 24, 2023 and closes March 31, 2023. We do need 20% of families to participate in order for us to review the data. Please help us reach our goal!

After School Conversations:
You want to know what your kids are doing in school, but you can’t get much out of them when you ask. Skip the way-too-open-ended “How was your day?” and try one of these after-school conversation starters instead. I (Mr. Sorensen) have been doing this with my kids for over a year (5th and 7th graders) and it has led to some good dinner/bed time conversations. We have played it as a game and they pick a number without knowing the questions, I read the question and have had them discuss their thoughts. Give it a try and see how it goes. Please let me know how it goes.

Did anyone do anything funny at school today?
What made you feel the happiest today?
What games did you play at recess?
Who did you play with or hang out with today?
When did you feel most proud of yourself today?
Tell me one new thing you learned today (insert subject area).
What made you laugh today?
Did you do anything nice for someone today?
How would you rate your day on a scale of one to 10?
What’s one thing you did today that helped a friend or your teacher?
What was your favorite part of lunch?
How were you brave today?
Tell me your top two things from the day. Why are they your top two?
If you had a camera at school today, what picture would you have taken?
Tell me something you are going to do tomorrow that will make someone’s day.
What is one thing your teacher said today that you remember most?
If you got to teach tomorrow, who would you want to be your assistant?
If your teacher had $500 to spend on the classroom, what do you think she would buy?
Who is the funniest person in your class? Why is he/she so funny?
In your opinion, where is the coolest place at the school?
What made you smile today?
What was the book about that your teacher read?
What was the peak and the pit?
What’s the easiest thing you did today?
Did you celebrate anyone’s birthday today?
Did you hear any good jokes today?
What would you change today?
What did you do today that made you feel proud?
Who did you enjoy talking to?
What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

SEL Blurb:

This week, kindergarten, first grade, and second grade learned more about problem solving.  Ask your students to explain the difference between a "rock problem" and a "playdoh problem"

Third grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade learned about perseverance.  Ask your students to tell you about a time they persevered this week.

Kindergarten Enrollment 2023-2024:
